Overview

StoreCensus is an ecommerce intelligence platform that tracks 4,337,535+ online stores, applications, technologies, and ecommerce trends across Shopify, WooCommerce, and additional platforms. The platform continuously processes store data to provide market insights, adoption statistics, technology intelligence, and benchmarking information.

StoreCensus operates as an independent research platform. Rankings, statistics, and market share figures are determined solely by observed data. StoreCensus does not receive compensation from app developers, vendors, or merchants for rankings, placement, or editorial coverage.

2

Store Discovery

StoreCensus continuously discovers and indexes active storefronts across Shopify, WooCommerce, and other supported ecommerce platforms globally. Coverage expands over time as new stores are identified through ongoing discovery processes.

Active stores are monitored and updated on a recurring basis. Stores that become inactive, migrate platforms, or are otherwise no longer accessible may be removed from the index over time.

StoreCensus does not expose proprietary store discovery techniques or internal infrastructure details.

3

Application Detection

StoreCensus identifies applications and plugins across supported ecommerce platforms using proprietary detection systems. Detection methods include storefront analysis, technology fingerprints, historical observations, and recurring validation processes.

App installation counts reflect current active installations — apps that are presently installed and active on a store at the time of detection. This differs from marketplace download counts (such as those shown in the Shopify App Store), which accumulate over time regardless of whether an app is still installed.

Detection accuracy varies by app and platform. Apps or plugins with non-standard or heavily obfuscated implementations may be detected at lower rates. StoreCensus does not reveal implementation-level detection details.

4

Technology Detection

StoreCensus identifies technologies and ecommerce tooling through proprietary technology fingerprinting and analysis systems. Detected technologies include themes, payment providers, analytics platforms, CDN configurations, and third-party integrations — across all tracked ecommerce platforms.

Technology coverage expands over time as new platforms, plugins, and services are identified and added to the detection system.

5

Traffic Estimates

Traffic estimates are generated using a combination of third-party traffic signals and proprietary modeling approaches.

Important: Traffic values should be interpreted as directional estimates rather than exact analytics figures. They are not equivalent to data from first-party analytics tools such as Google Analytics or Shopify Analytics.

6

Revenue Estimates

Revenue estimates are generated using proprietary models that incorporate store characteristics, traffic indicators, technology usage, and additional observed signals.

Important: Revenue estimates should be considered directional estimates only. They should not be interpreted as audited financial results, official company disclosures, or precise revenue figures. Actual merchant revenue may differ materially from StoreCensus estimates.

7

Data Refresh

StoreCensus data is updated on a recurring basis as stores, applications, technologies, and market activity are observed and processed.

Update frequency may vary depending on data type and availability:

  • App and plugin installation statistics: Weekly
  • Store benchmarks by vertical: Nightly
  • App co-install data: Nightly
  • Technology detection: Recurring
  • Traffic and revenue estimates: Periodic

Limitations

No large-scale dataset is perfectly complete or error-free.

Store counts, application detections, technology detections, traffic estimates, and revenue estimates may change over time as additional information becomes available, stores are discovered or removed, and detection systems are updated.

Statistics published by StoreCensus should be interpreted as research and market intelligence data rather than official company disclosures or audited figures.

Specific limitations include:

  • App and plugin detection may not capture 100% of installations for apps with non-standard implementation patterns.
  • Store counts reflect StoreCensus discovery capability and may not represent the complete global store population for any given platform.
  • Traffic and revenue estimates are modeled values and carry inherent uncertainty.
  • Historical data may be revised as detection systems improve.
  • Stores that have recently changed their technology stack may not yet reflect those changes.
  • Coverage depth varies by platform. Shopify and WooCommerce have the most comprehensive coverage; additional platforms may have more limited data.

Research and Statistics

Statistics published throughout StoreCensus are generated from proprietary datasets and aggregated observations across tracked stores on Shopify, WooCommerce, and other supported platforms. Reported values may evolve over time as coverage expands and datasets are refreshed.

Growth rates are calculated by comparing current observed values to historical snapshots at defined intervals (30 days, 90 days, 12 months). Market share percentages are calculated as a proportion of total tracked stores within a given platform, not the complete global store population for that platform.

StoreCensus statistics are intended for market research, competitive intelligence, and benchmarking purposes. They should not be used as the sole basis for financial decisions, investment decisions, or legal proceedings.
