StoreCensus crawls Shopify storefronts every week. A store is counted when its domain serves a Shopify storefront. Expired domains, sites flagged as not being a store (such as social network pages), and alias domains of a store already counted are excluded, so each store is counted once.
That makes this a count of storefronts, not of Shopify merchant accounts or every domain ever seen on Shopify, which is why it is lower than some published figures.
As of October 9, 2026, StoreCensus tracks 2,125,924 live Shopify stores. Expired domains, sites flagged as not being a store, and alias domains of a store already counted are excluded.

StoreCensus tracks 2,618,281 live WooCommerce stores and 2,125,924 live Shopify stores. WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin and includes many small sites; Shopify stores are hosted shops on Shopify's platform.
Counts differ by what is included. Some sources count every domain ever seen on Shopify, including expired and duplicate domains, or use Shopify's merchant figure, which counts accounts rather than storefronts. StoreCensus counts live storefronts it has crawled.
