i grew up in the slums of kibera. as a son of a driver, we stayed in a one room dwelling. i later moved to spring valley under the guardianship of a pathologist whom my father used to drive. i had an opportunity to study in nairobi primary school. we studied with the likes of jonathan moi, charles rubia’s son, omamo. i keep urging the government to invest in good primary and secondary schools to achieve equity in basic and secondary education. after my sponsors left, i went back to kibera. i did my comprehensive primary education (cpe), and i was called to join lenana high school or also known as the duke of yoke. however, my parents could not manage the school fees, so i ended up in upper hill high school. i studied with the likes of dr. frank njenga and later joined mangu high school , but did not qualify for the medicine course, i so passionately desired to take . i was frustrated by the outcome, then my mother spoke profoundly to me. she said , i will one day become a great teacher. so i settled for a degree in education . i believe in the words of marin luther king junior that: “not everyone can be famous, but everyone can be great. because greatness is determined by service”
